- Each chapter contains several tables for easy access to data.
- Listing of Referral Laboratories provides a list of labs that can be contacted for certain diseases.
- Reference Values provide an instant source to identify coagulation, hematology , etc., reference values.
- Laboratory Findings of Selected Diseases give the reader a brief overview of diagnostic features.
- A full-color, 8-page insert of illustrations aids in morphologic diagnosis.
- Expert editors and contributors provide the most accurate, authoritative information.

This is the second edition of a clinical pathology textbook written primarily for small animal practitioners. This update has added 10 new contributors, the majority of whom are diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. The purpose is to provide a concise reference for diagnostic tests commonly used by veterinary practitioners. The information includes a brief summarization of diagnostic approaches to various medical problems, available diagnostic tests, indications and limitations for each test, and conclusions that can be made based on test results. This book does a fairly good job of updating practitioners on newly developed laboratory tests. This book will be of interest primarily for small animal practitioners. The majority of the contributors are small animal clinicians and as such are able to present information in a manner that is easily understood by practitioners. However, a criticism of the book is the limited number of clinical pathologists who contributed to it. Features include an introductory chapter discussing the use of in-office diagnostic tests and procedures and the use of referral laboratories. Fifteen chapters discuss laboratory tests for the diagnosis of disorders of various body systems. Appendixes include listings of referral laboratories and reference values for commonly used tests. The book includes four pages of color plates, and additional color illustrations would improve the usefulness of this book as a reference for practitioners to use for their ""in-house' evaluation of urine sediments, hematology, and cytology. Numerous flow charts and tables provide useful information to guide practitioners through diagnostic approaches tocommon diseases. This book will be most useful to practitioners who have been in practice for several years and need an updated reference on currently available laboratory tests.

This third edition book offers detailed explanations and interpretations of laboratory tests used to diagnose clinical disease in small animals. Sections on hematology and serum biochemistry divided by organ system, as well as three appendixes with very useful diagnostic information for the general practitioner, are included. The first edition of the book was published in 1989. The purpose is to help veterinarians and veterinary students appropriately select and accurately interpret laboratory tests in a simple, practical, and rapid manner. Complete information regarding available diagnostic tests is provided, and the most useful and pragmatic tests are recommended to streamline diagnosis. The objectives as outlined by the editors are mostly met. This book is intended for use by practicing veterinarians and veterinary students. Other veterinarians specializing in the field of pathology or laboratory diagnostics can benefit from the explicit information. All editors and contributng authors are credible and are recognized in the field of veterinary diagnostic medicine. Few colored plates of excellent quality are presented at the beginning of the book illustrating random points discussed in the text. Algorithms and tables scattered throughout the text complement the editors' objectives. Appendixes I and II are exceptionally helpful as reference sources to veterinarians. Appendix III is vague and could be eliminated. Diagnostic laboratory test use and interpretation divided by organ system are extremely advantageous for rapid acquisition of information. While the book meets the objective as a rapid, practical reference source for veterinarians and veterinary students, it lacks theproper illustrative component necessary to best convey information in some of the chapters. Chapters focusing on cytologic interpretations would benefit from colored pictures rather than line drawings or text descriptions. The update of information from the second edition is necessary in this evolving field of veterinary diagnostic medicine.
