Reviewer:Willem J.S de Villiers, MD, PhD (University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description:This eighth edition, like its predecessors, is a comprehensive and authoritative textbook of gastrointestinal diseases. A section on liver disease has now become integral to the book. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose:The book is intended for gastroenterologists, trainees in gastroenterology, primary care physicians, residents in medicine and surgery, and medical students. This successful book is a superb example of a state-of-the-art, user-friendly textbook that covers disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tree, pancreas, and liver, as well as related topics of nutrition and peritoneal diseases.
Audience:Those in the medical field with a more than passing interest in gastroenterology and hepatology should acquire this comprehensive and authoritative textbook. It is beautifully illustrated and user-friendly, yet contains a wealth of information. The editors and contributors are all eminent authorities in their respective fields.
Features:This 2-volume textbook is divided into 12 sections which comprehensively address biology of the GI tract and liver; approach to patients with symptoms and signs; nutrition in gastroenterology; topics involving multiple organs; esophagus; stomach and duodenum; pancreas; biliary tract; liver; small and large intestine; and psychosocial factors in gastrointestinal disease. Although the sections on the approach to patients and nutrition were particularly enjoyable, the quality of the material throughout is uniformly excellent. The figures in this edition are ofexceptionally high quality and clarity. Many color photographs have been placed directly into the relevant chapters, rather than in a separate section of color plates or in a companion atlas, as has been done in the past. The addition of a CD-ROM with downloadable images for PowerPoint presentations would have been appreciated.
Assessment:This edition has been further improved and refined, however difficult that may be in this day and age. The contents remain as academically sound as always, but the aesthetic appearance has been much enhanced. It is a must for every gastroenterologist's and hepatologist's bookshelf. The fast-moving pace of the field warrants a new edition.
