Reviewer:Mitzi K Zarfoss, DVM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description:This is arguably the most complete and up-to-date ophthalmology resource for the general veterinary practitioner. The color illustrations and photos are a vast improvement over the previous edition published in 2001. This book includes more chapters and concurrently more information (i.e. neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmology of exotic pets) than other books.
Purpose:The purpose, "to provide a basic outline and introduction to clinical ophthalmology for both undergraduate veterinary students and practitioners" is retained from the previous edition.
Audience:Although it is intended for veterinary students and practitioners, the book is also useful to veterinary ophthalmology residents as a reference, particularly early in their programs and also in their efforts to educate clinical veterinary students.
Features:The images, summary tables, glossary, and the appendix of breed-related ocular diseases are extremely useful. Shortcomings include the relative neglect of food/farm animal ophthalmology and the loss of the "red eye" and other flowchart/appendixes that were in the previous edition.
Assessment:This high quality book should be the most compatible with veterinary student education across the country. It is a marked improvement over the previous edition in both esthetics and content, while preserving the general principles and coherent organization of the previous edition.
