    Synopsis

Now, this is life on the open road, if one's open road requires a stainless steel refrigerator. Distinguished photographer Keister shows us the upscale side of the travel trailer lifestyle in his shots of these lovingly restored examples from the 1930s onward, complete with their white picket fences and pink flamingos precisely placed around the campsite. He begins with a forward by Arroll Gellner on the Streamline Moderne design movement, which for some reason included toasters, and moves on to these alcazars on wheels, often in the company of the vintage cars that tow them. He also includes ads for such as the Jungle Yacht, a pairing of a 1938 pickup and trailer under a single nightmarish stretch of metal. The interiors are particularly interesting, including a bathtub fitted under a dinette bench, a clever setup whereby one could drive with one hand and wash the breakfast dishes with the other, and an entire museum.
