    Synopsis

    A DEADLY FIRST SEASON
Lady Rose Summer couldn’t be more delighted to assist Society’s most beautiful new debutante Miss Dolly Tremaine in negotiating her very first Season. Now engaged to Captain Harry Cathcart in order to avoid being shipped off to India, Rose is desperate to do something more useful than attend endless balls and parties. And the country-bred Dolly was totally at sea—and needed all the help Rose could give. But when Rose rushes to prevent Dolly from making a disastrous mistake, she discovers her stabbed to death and floating in a boat on the Serpentine River. And it isn’t long before Rose barely survives an attempt on her own life. Now, Rose and Harry’s race to uncover the secrets of Dolly’s life is stirring up a hornet’s nest of deceptions and devilish schemes from London’s most exclusive townhouses to the seemingly-peaceful Yorkshire coast. And a cunning murderer is only a breath away from burying the truth—and the persistent Lady Rose—with one devastating stroke...

“A tidy and well-executed mystery/historical with strong overtones of romance.”
    Library Journal

“A lighthearted romantic romp through Edwardian snobbery, with hints of the cataclysmic changes in store for high society.”
    Kirkus Reviews

    Library Journal

To the utter dismay of her wealthy, aristocratic parents, Lady Rose Summer insists on stretching the mold. Spuriously presenting herself as the fiancee of Capt. Harry Cathcart (Snobbery with Violence) in order to keep from being sent to India, Rose endures endless parties and dinners, while Harry, busy with his protective and investigative services, appears to neglect her. He quickly comes to her aid, however, when she discovers the body of a fresh arrival on the social scene-the beautiful daughter of a clergyman-and begins sleuthing. A tidy and well-executed mystery/historical with strong overtones of romance: light entertainment for all collections. Chesney, who also writes the Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth series under the name M.C. Beaton, lives in England and in Paris. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Silly but entertainingby RuthTC

March 02, 2009: On the one hand, Marion Chesney/M.C. Beaton does an excellent job of conveying the mood and mores of a past era, and I always learn something from her books. On the other hand, the central theme of this series - a supposedly fake engagement to protect the heroine from being shipped off to India to find a husband, and the somewhat comic misunderstandings that result - gets a little tiresome even in one book, much less several.

February 17, 2009: I read the series one after another and the only thing I was disappionted in was that I heard the author put down this series to work underneath her other pen name. If your out there M.C. Beaton, PLEASE pick up this series again. If you wrote 20 more books tommorrow I would buy them all in a heartbeat.

I Also Recommend: Hasty Death (Edwardian Murder Series #2), Snobbery with Violence (Edwardian Murder Series #1), Our Lady of Pain (Edwardian Murder Series #4).
