Synopsis

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

BUST Magazine

I was impressed and incredulous that this exquisitely nuanced ode to the living hell that is one woman's puberty was written by a man [gasp]. His stunningly drawn portrait of the scarred, misterable and oft-times gastronomically challenged Dolores seduces the reader into acknowledging some of the very reasons we don't always enjoy being a girl.

Biography

Wally Lamb's books are neither short nor simple; but like a James Patterson of emotions, he pulls readers in and doesn't let go. His affecting novels are marvels of imagination and empathy.

November 21, 2008: I loved this book so much that I couldn't stop reading it. It was an inspiring book to me and how the main characater faces different challenges in life and overcomes those challenges. Completely amazing, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is into fiction and loves reading.

September 26, 2007: What Lamb does here is not write a compelling, coming-of-age tale in a girl's voice. Lamb seemingly becomes Delores Price. This demigod-like feat is not achieved by the fainthearted. To be a woman is to hold within yourself thousands of years worth of secrets. Everything from the crush on the patriarchal man upstairs to the soul-shattering feeling of being an outcast, Lamb captures every woman's fears, desires, defeats, and triumphs in this book. This feminine bildungsroman gives the reader a gift in its protagonist. Delores is not a person whom the reader wants to be however, she can be the person the reader has been or can become. Binge eating, bullying, rape, parental departure, repression, abuse, adultery, insanity, sexuality, and self-exploration are just a few things Lamb gracefully exposes in this brilliant work. To read this book is to open a place in your soul...
