    Synopsis

Behind the foreboding walls of Newgate Prison, a pact is sealed in secret—as a dashing and doomed criminal consents to wed a beautiful heiress...in return for one night of unparalleled pleasure.

In the fading echoes of hollow wedding vows, a promise is broken—as a sensuous free-sirit flees to a lush Caribbean paradise, abandoning the handsome stranger she married to the gallows. But Ruark Beauchamp's destiny is now eternally intertwined ewith his exquisite, tempestuous Shanna's. And no iron ever forged can imprison his magnificent passion...and no hangman's noose will deny him the ecstasy that is rightfully his.

    Kristin Ramsdell - Library Journal

A desperate bargain and a hasty marriage in Newgate Prison have unexpected consequences for Shanna and Ruark in this lively 1977 romance with a lush Caribbean setting.

    Biography

In 1972, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss sent a hefty historical romance novel, The Flame and the Flower, to eight different publishers and received eight rejection letters. Finally, Avon Books picked up the book, and it became an instant bestseller. Since then, Woodiwiss has sold more than 36 million copies of her romance novels, and colleagues have dubbed her the First Lady of Romance.

November 05, 2009: Kathleen Woodiwiss is an exceptional Historical Romance Writer, of all of her novels, this is my all time favorite. Shanna has the hautiest personality of any of Kathleen's characters and it takes a strong willed personality from our leading man Raurk, to win her heart. Of course it is never as easy as just winning the heart of our leading Lady, being a condemned murderer, bondslave, and later dumped into the clutches of priates....how will our Handsome Leading Man ever survive to win her heart? I absolutely LOVE this book!!!!

I Also Recommend: Ashes in the Wind.

August 03, 2009: Kathleen Woodiwiss in my opinion is the queen of historical romance. She has proven it time and time again including Shanna. This story starts with a plot which in the beginning is intriging yet cruel. But as the story takes off you find all the makings of a really good book; mystery, romance and action. I truly loved this book and will read it again and again.
