Description:Since the first edition of this book was published in 1997, significant changes have occurred in sectional imaging modalities. This edition adds these new modalities in an easy to use clinical reference manual and instructional text.
Purpose:The purpose of this edition is to include 3D and vascular technologies to the already abundant cross sectional images. The authors' intent was to provide "a clear concise text that would demonstrate in an easy to use yet comprehensive format the anatomy the health professional is required to understand to optimize patient care." The book certainly meets the objectives.
Audience:It is written for practicing health professionals. Anyone working in healthcare may be interested in the cross sectional images that we are seeing more and more frequently. For anyone in radiology, the topic is a requirement.
Features:The book covers all anatomic sections of the body by starting with an in-depth description of the anatomy, then showing images that highlight the anatomy discussed in cross section. Particularly interesting are the pathology boxes interspersed throughout describing common conditions related to the anatomy. A shortcoming is the use of abbreviations on the images that require a key to decode.
Assessment:Although this is a comprehensive tool for learning cross sectional anatomy, I prefer the images used in Madden's Introduction to Sectional Anatomy, 2nd edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008) . Madden's book uses no abbreviations and always includes a line drawingcorresponding to all of the images. The pathology boxes in this book are useful additions that highlight the common diseases seen in a typical clinical setting. The second edition is a necessity in this age of changing modalities.
