Now that she has (sort of) defeated a diabolical elf, Keelie Heartwood reluctantly joins her father in the Dread Forest. Her "real" friends are gone, her dad is preoccupied with his new responsibilities as Lord of the Forest and now it seems that her budding romance with the hunky Sean is dashed. Except for her impossible guardian cat Knot, and Alora, a demanding and bratty little princess tree, Keelie has no one to hang with—unless you count that nasty elf-girl Elia, who suddenly wants to be Keelie's frenemy.
Meanwhile, an age-old rift in Keelie's family and among the elves reaches a dangerous climax as humans and dark magical forces alike encroach on the elves' enchanted realm. The fate of the Dread Forest—and of all who dwell within it—lies in Keelie's hands.
Be on the watch for new adventures with Keelie and the elves as the Faire Folk saga continues in the Scions of Shadow Trilogy...
In this final novel in the Faire Folk Trilogy, sixteen-year-old Keelie Heartwood, half elf and half human, has joined her father in the Dread Forest, his ancestral home. Keelie is faced with a new set of challenges: her burgeoning romance with the dashing elf Sean is on the rocks, she has to care for a bratty and demanding treeling named Alora, and she has no friends in her new home. Her usually supportive father is preoccupied with restoring the Dread, a magical force that keeps humans out of the forest. While exploring the forest, Keelie meets Jake, a handsome and benignly charming vampire who feeds on the energy of living things and who seems to want to protect her. His help might be needed as Keelie begins to uncover a plot among some of the elves to gain power by using dark magic. The pleasant mix of fairy dust and romance that were the hallmark of the previous two books in the trilogy are still present in this book, but it is not quite as engaging. One of the most charming elements of the series was the Renaissance Faire setting, which is missing in this book. The insertion of the vampire character Jake is obviously calculated to lure Twilight Saga fans and thus seems blatantly contrived. Keelie, however, is a feisty and enjoyable character who can keep readers' interest going despite the minor slips in the story. The book zips along satisfactorily to a predictable conclusion, so fans of the series will likely not be disappointed. Reviewer: Jan Chapman
More Reviews and RecommendationsGillian Summers is the pseudonym for co-authors, Berta Platas (Georgia) and Michelle Roper (Georgia), both experienced writers in the romance and fantasy genres, respectively. But more importantly, both are ardent renaissance faire groupies.

November 11, 2009: This is a unique and unsung trilogy that is ecologically oriented and inventively fantastical. Modern day elves travel from Renaissance Festivals caring for the forests at they go. Their home forest is imperiled by construction and the pitched fight for their own forest will draw fighting families together.
