February 17, 2009: Unlike many breeds, the Scottish Deerhound is still fairly rare in the US, and has an unfortunately small amount of literature about it. Except for a few specialty publications, this is one of only 2 or 3 books out there on this fascinating breed. Being one of a series about many different breeds, about one half of the material is completely generic and appears in all of the volumes of this series. The little that is strictly about Deerhounds is informative and reasonably well written, if only skimming the surface. However, a little is better than nothing and the photos are good, so there is some value in this book. It's a good place to start if you're interested in finding out about the breed. I would recommend searching out-of-print bookstores and websites for "The Deerhound" by A.N.Hartley or "The Scottish Deerhound" by Edwin Weston Bell for a more thorough background and history of the breed. Even though these books were written more than 50 years ago, they are still packed with vital information. Let's hope that someone will write a truly up-to-date "Complete Book of the Scottish Deerhound" one of these days.....
