    Synopsis

Now in full color, the Fourth Edition of this text gives students a thorough understanding of microbial agents and the pathophysiology of microbial diseases. The text facilitates learning and recall by emphasizing unifying principles and paradigms, rather than forcing students to memorize isolated facts by rote. Case studies with problem-solving questions give students insight into clinical applications of microbiology. Each chapter ends with review and USMLE-style questions. For this edition, all schematic illustrations have been re-rendered in full color and new illustrations have been added.

A new online site for students includes animations, USMLE-style questions, and all schematic illustrations and photographs from the text.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D (ABMM) (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This book that covers the major concepts in microbiology and places them into the context of clinical disease could be used in teaching a course in medical microbiology.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a solid framework in which students gain an understanding of infectious disease. Although there are a number of similar textbooks, this is a new edition of a classic.
Audience:This book is designed to be used in classes that focus on understanding infectious disease. The authors are all well known researchers studying microbial pathogenesis or clinicians in infectious disease. Their contributions to this textbook will be very valuable to a variety of students. It would be appropriate for medical students, allied health professionals, graduate students, and possibly undergraduates in their senior year.
Features:The first of the book's three sections details the basic concepts of microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology as related to infections. The second section illustrates the various microbial agents that cause disease in humans, and the third describes how infectious disease affects the different systems of the body. Each chapter begins with a box that contains the key concepts that will be covered. In the last two sections, clinical cases and questions are included in a blue background. Additionally, some of the chapters have highlighted areas that provide historical perspective or additional interesting information, such as the discovery of yellow fever and the spread of syphilis.
Assessment:This is a goodtextbook. The organization of information is easy to follow and the price is reasonable for students. The additional electronic material is also of value to students needing to practice for board examinations.
