Synopsis

New York Times bestseller Stuart Woods returns with a fast-paced thriller, starring Ed Eagle, the take-no-prisoners attorney from Santa Fe Rules and Short Straw.

When last we encountered Ed Eagle, he had been the target of a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by his wife, Barbara, the ultimate black widow. But when Barbara escapes from police custody, Ed knows that not only will his life be in danger but also the life of his new girlfriend, and, of course, of any rich man unlucky enough to be lured into Barbara's web. To add to his troubles, Ed has taken on a new client, Don Wells, who may or may not have murdered his own wife and son.

From the posh resorts of southern California to the New Mexico desert and the seedy hotels of Tijuana, Ed Eagle will follow every lead—and hope that he doesn't wind up Santa Fe Dead.

Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Woods's third thriller to feature prominent New Mexican attorney Ed Eagle (after Short Strawand Santa Fe Rules) opens with a bang, but soon devolves into a fairly predictable cat-and-mouse game. Ed and his girlfriend, actress Susannah Wilde, are watching the Los Angeles trial on Court TV of his villainous ex-wife, Barbara, who stands accused of arranging for his murder, when a reporter announces that Barbara has escaped from custody just before the not guilty verdict. Soon, suitably disguised and under an alias, Barbara contrives to meet a recent widower, Palo Alto billionaire Walter Keeler, at a luxury spa and has him proposing marriage and making a new will in her favor. Meanwhile, her hatred for her ex unquenched, Barbara schemes to have Ed and Susannah killed. Bodies, innocent and otherwise, pile up, but there's little suspense about the outcome, and an improbable coincidence involving the billionaire may strike some as a plot weakness. Author tour. Customer Rating for this product is 3 out of 5 I've read just about all of Stuart Woods' books
A reviewer, an animal lover., 05/28/2008

This book was okay. I found a couple of errors and think that someone else should proofread before printing. In this book, Barbara goes to a spa and picks up a bottle of bourbon beforehand since the spa does not serve liquor. In the next chapter, she has a couple of drinks of scotch in her room. She should have been drinking bourbon! Well, at least she is put away for 25 years and we won't have to deal with her for a while.....or will we?

Also recommended: Have read them all, except for his travelogues! I enjoy the Stone Barrington books the most.

Even his worst book is better than most others. I missed Stone and his people but enjoyed this book very much. I've recommeded it to my book club members.

Also recommended: All of Woods' books and also books by Lisa Scottoline, Harlon Coben and Janet Evanovich.
