When Buck, Billy, and their little sister Lil spy the biggest pumpkin they've ever seen, they can't resist. Buck and Billy try to roll the pumpkin down the hill to show everyone, but it's too big! Before they know it, it's bumping and thumping and rolling out of control down the hillside. It busts through Momma Baxter's sty and makes her think of pumpkin pie. It knocks over Grandpa Baxter and makes him think of pumpkin soup. And when Poppa Baxter finally stops it in a pumpkin bed, all he can think of is pumpkin bread.
The Baxter brothers find a wonderful pumpkin for Halloween, but first they must catch up with it when it rolls down the hill.
In Lewis's (Chugga-Chugga Choo-Choo) rhyming tale, it is Halloween day when an enormous pumpkin bounces downhill and through the Baxter family farm. At the sight of this "thumpety/ bumpety/ thumpin'/ bumpin'/ round and rolly/ runaway pumpkin!" the Baxters think not of personal safety but of Granny's pumpkin recipes. Schindler (Skeleton Hiccups), in amusing but untidy compositions, gives each person an astonished expression and a thought-balloon flash of pumpkin bread, soup or pie. Crisis averted, the resourceful family carves a humongous jack-o'-lantern while Granny bakes. A solid choice for children who prefer a slapstick celebration to chills and thrills. Ages 4-7. (Sept.) October 24, 2006: I was thrilled to have stumbled upon The Runaway Pumpkin. Kevin Lewis is the author of Chugga, Chugga, Choo, Choo my son?s favorite baby book. Thus, I knew it was going to be great even before reading the first page. The pulse is addictive, so much so I find myself humming it hours later ~ the cadence is wonderful! S.D. Schindler is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists of children?s books. He illustrated some of my favorite Halloween books: Big Pumpkin, Skeleton Hiccups, One Witch, and now The Runaway Pumpkin. His work is special, because he captivates his audience with rich, and humorous details. Adults will love reading this book for the fantastic illustrations, and humor.
