(Paperback - REVISED)
Rout 66 is one of America's most remarkable nostalgic icons. Stories, songs, and fables- funny, heartwarming, and magical- celebrate this legendary roadway.
Route 66 was the road of dreamers and ramblers, drifters and writers, the road of John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie, and Jack Kerouac. After 17 years of research, Wallis presents the definitive chronicle of Route 66, from its founding to its interstate-induced demise to its current revival.
Wallis (Oilman) has spent some 17 years researching and writing this nostalgic revisiting of a road that more than any other kindled the wanderlust after WWII. It was a route that symbolized long- distance auto travel. Here are some 220 period and contemporary photos (190 in fair to fine color). His text covers the history of the road, the hustlers, the builders, the small businessmen that depended upon 66 to bring the customers. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

May 02, 2007: It is patently obvious that author Michael Wallace has done his research. Even if you are not a Route 66 buff you will enjoy the history, perspective, and personal insight so abundant in 'The Mother Road'. Although Wallace hits the high points on a few of the more notable roadside attractions, most of his text is focused on the history of the road and how it relates to a specific area. It really is a wonderful read. The addition of the 'Faces of Route 66' featurettes only serves to make the stories all the more personal. Highly Recommended!

June 02, 2004: This book is my favorite of all the Route 66 books. It goes state by state. It is easy to follow. It interviews some of the more famous characters on the road. Some of these road warriors have died since the original publication. If you only buy one 66 book, this is the best. Pictures of some of the places are still exactly the same many years later.
