    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Rohit Gupta, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This book is an indispensable clinical resource for the practicing emergency medicine physician. Just as its name implies, it provides concise, relevant, and sufficiently detailed information about the diagnosis, treatment, and disposition of an extremely wide spectrum of clinical entities.
Purpose:The book is intended to serve as a clinical aid to the practicing physician. It is meant to be consulted frequently and rapidly during the course of practice. The incredible breadth of emergency medicine can overwhelm the memory capacity of even the most capable physician. This book is an invaluable resource, functioning as an easily accessible peripheral brain. The authors truly accomplish their objectives.
Audience:This book is targeted to practicing emergency medicine physicians at all levels of training. For physicians in training, concise reviews of frequently encountered clinical problems enable quick review that focuses on critical management steps. The book covers such a large breadth of subjects in sufficient detail that even the most experienced physician will likely find information that is valuable. Written by some of the best known teachers in our field, this book will be an invaluable tool in any department.
Features:The book covers an incredibly wide assortment of clinical conditions. Organized in alphabetical order, the book is designed to provide concise reviews of individual topics, not comprehensive reviews of entire subjects. Only two pages are devoted to most topics. Consequently, the book tends to cover specifictopics better than general conditions or complaints that have long differential diagnoses. The book provides well written summaries of clinical presentations, diagnosis, treatment, and disposition. It is not, however, an evidence-based review or summary of the literature.
Assessment:I believe that this is an extremely useful textbook for the practicing emergency medicine physician. It allows rapid review of topics while providing patient care. It is easy to use and its layout facilitates rapid review, a quality appreciated by all emergency medicine physicians. It is not intended to be a core textbook for complete review of entire subjects. I think it fulfills the need for a hands-on reference in the department perfectly.
