    Synopsis

Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is part of the Barnes & Noble Shakespeare series. This unique series features newly edited texts prepared by leading scholars from America and Great Britain, in collaboration with one of the world’s foremost Shakespeare authorities, David Scott Kastan of Columbia University. Together they have produced texts as faithful as possible to those that Shakespeare wrote.

Each volume in the Barnes & Noble Shakespeare includes:

    • New Scholarship – Premiere scholars introduce each play with contemporary scholarship. An essay on editing the text provides an in-depth look at the quartos and folios used in the edition.
    • Contextualizing Essays – Essays on Shakespeare’s England, language, and life, along with essays on performing Shakespeare and significant performances frame the play in both historical and theatrical context for readers. A look at the lasting influence of the play on music, art, film, and dance creates an interdisciplinary framework with which to approach the play.
    • Better Notes – Through one-word margin definitions, facing-page glosses, and longer end notes after the play, our innovative approach to notes pulls readers away from the text fewer times while providing them with more information and comprehensive analysis.
    • Further Reading – An annotated bibliography of titles, hand-selected by the introduction author, takes readers beyond the edition for further reading.

When Romeo and Juliet was first performed, its two title characters would have seemed like very unlikely tragicheroes, since they possess no historical importance or political status. The editor, Mario DiGangi, restores the play to its original context, demonstrating in detail how Shakespeare elevated his teenage characters’ plight to make them the most famous tragic couple in literature.

January 10, 2010: This tragedy written by William Shakespeare is about two young lovers who need to keep their relationship a secret because their families are in a feud. This is a great book for teenagers and older. It is expressed with William Shakespeare's dialect, which is a bit hard to understand. The author's purpose was to write something dramatic about a love story. Romeo and Juliet is a very intriguing book for people who like drama. Romeo and Juliet fall deeply in love and get married in secret. They go through lots and lots of suffering just to maintain their relationship. Their families are enemies and Romeo and Juliet try hard in hiding their feelings and actions of love for one another. Unfortunately, there comes the time where their love is revealed which creates further problems. The most famous scene of this story is the balcony scene where Romeo and Juliet express their feelings of love for one another in soliloquies. The author has many of his famous quotes in this play. One of those quotes is "It is the east, and Juliet is the sun." The plot was a bit confusing in some parts of the story. Sometimes it was the characters that made it confusing while in other times, it was the author's writing. Each of the characters suited their role very well. The theme of this story is love. In fact, it is known to be the most famous love story ever written. The book excellently achieves its goals and purpose and it made me think of life and love in a slightly different angle. This was one of the best books I've ever read in the same genre. People who like drama will find this book very intriguing. If you read this book it might also change your view in love like it did to me; and you will enjoy it for sure!

January 01, 2010: I love this story. It is the foundation for "girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks"" plot. Without Romeo and Juliet there would be no " Little Mermaid" or "Pretty in Pink." Well, I could go on and on. The point is that this story is a true classic. This book is a legend in itself and it will never die. It causes great controversy in ones self. Where they truly each others soul mate or where they just young ignorant teenagers overwhelmed by their hormones? I guess every ones personal Romeo and Juliet story is different; some ending in tragedy and others happily ever after. Not only did this story capture me as an adolescent but i lived the story itself. I too fell for the boy on the wrong side of the tracks; however, I'm currently living happily ever after. I'm living proof that it was not my hormones at 16 years old, I was truly in love. I'm happy nine years later with "Romeo," 2 kids and a dog.
