    Synopsis

A man embarks on a cross-country trip to save his son after a plague has turned nearly all of America's population into zombies.

    Library Journal

The world has changed and the dead are rising up as intelligent zombies. Jim Thurmond, one of the few living humans, goes on a frantic journey across the country to save his son. Aided in his quest by a former prostitute, an ex-preacher, and a scientist driven by guilt, he travels through a broken landscape of once-human monsters. Not for the squeamish, this title by the author of No Rest for the Wicked is a marginal purchase for horror collections. Illustrations not seen. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    A rip-roaring zombie carnival ride!by nfmgirl

June 15, 2009: The Rising was just one big rip-roaring zombie carnival ride! I found this book to be a lot of fun-- much better than the last Brian Keene book that I read (Castways). A bit vulgar, grossly violent, but what else could be expected from this genre?

It seems the "end of the world" has come, but this zombie story has a slight twist. Whenever reading a zombie story, you always wonder what the plot will be that will explain how the zombies are created. The common storyline usually involves an errant virus that man unwittingly unleashes, but occasionally a story will surface that posits a different cause, as does this story.

The story follows several characters, each on their own mission, the main character simply a father trying to find his son.

Moments of this book read like an Evil Dead movie. Irreverent, even comical. I consider a book of this nature to be sort of "light reading". It's just an enjoyable story and a fun ride. It's reminiscent of old time Stephen King. In fact, I think that Brian Keene borrowed a little from "the King" for this story, even including a close duplicate of The Stand's character Tom Cullen in this book's character Worm. And the father's quest for his son was a little reminiscent of Stephen King's The Cell. But that's okay. It wasn't enough to distract me from the enjoyment of the story.

I wasn't thrilled with the ending of the book, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this story. A little creepy and a lot of fun, I would recommend this one to any horror buffs out there.

May 02, 2009: Multiple characters are trying to survive in a world being overrun by zombies. Jim's fight to survive involves trying to save his son Danny that is across the from WV to NJ. Part 1 of 2. Next City of the dead. Last read in 2007. Read again Dec 2008.

I learned you have to enjoy the story as told by the author and know that they probably would want to write it lots of different ways but only have so much time to finish. Rating a book badly based on grammer is too anal and could maybe account for 1/2 or 1/4 star off the rating but if the whole of the reason is based on bad editing I don't really understand why people are upset by this. This is not a perfect world where everything is up to standard. If you don't like GORE don't read horror. If you don't like SEX don't read erotica. If you do not like adult subject matter read Twilight =) I've seen some silly reasons to give low ratings to books but, my goodness, how do books get read for some of the reasons given why they are so bad.

It has to end sometime, someway. I was glad to have both novels to read back to back or I'd have been a little mad about the end too. Brian Keene explains his reasons. He gives us more in other short stories as well. Glad to be a fan and to have a book to want to re-read even though I have hundreds waiting TBR.
