At the end of the school year, Kendra and her brother Seth find themselves racing back to Fablehaven, a refuge for mythical and magical creatures. Grandpa Sorenson, the caretaker, invites three specialists a potion master, a magical relics collector, and a mystical creature trapper to help protect the property from the Society of the Evening Star, an ancient organization determined to infiltrate the preserve and steal a hidden artifact of great power. Time is running out. The Evening Star is storming the gates. If the artifact falls into the wrong hands, it could mean the downfall of other preserves and possibly the world. Will Kendra learn to use her fairy gifts in time? Will Seth stay out of trouble?
Mull's awkward writing sometimes underscores the overfamiliar plot mechanics of the two-children-save-the-world fantasy, but his story offers unexpected twists and entertainingly scary creatures.
More Reviews and RecommendationsBrandon Mull published his first book Fablehaven in the summer of 2006. His publisher, Shadow Mountain, rejected a manuscript he submitted in 2005 that was geared towards adults. But the editors liked his writing style and asked him to try and create a story for a younger audience. He already had the idea for Fablehaven and wrote the book during the next five months on nights and weekends while still working his day job writing marketing copy for a movie company.

November 23, 2009: This series is just fun to read. It's easy reading and fast paced. The trials the main characters go through are good lessons for young readers and remind us old folks of our own youthful foolishness. There is always something happening in the story, so you are never bored. I especially like the way each character grows and matures a little more with each book. Never a dull moment and pure entertainment for all. I would highly recommend this series for both young and old.

October 26, 2009: A good continuation of the story. The characters continue to be developed and it has a good plot although a little hard to follow in some places. But it is the kind of book that can be enjoyed by the entire family, especially when read together. It holds your attention and leaves you wanting for more. Seth continues to make poor choices and seems to not really be held accountable or learn much from his mistakes. But he is also brave and his heart is in the right place. There are some pretty intense experiences and Brandon Mull does a great job describing them. The reader almost becomes part of the story. So far, a good series.
