November 11, 2009: If you are interested in buying a purebred dog, then this is the book for you. When we first thought about owning a purebred, we had a completely different dog in mind. This book is a wonder. This books shows no favorites. It will help you, plain and simple. However, there is nothing wrong with a mutt. Unless you are going to show your dog, go to your local Humane Society. You can find whatever you are looking for, (which is what we do now) and we haven't been disappointed yet.

May 12, 2008: This is the book I used to find my dog. If you start at the beginning and understand how he describes traits and behaviors you can easily create a spread sheet of what you want in a dog. That's what I did. I started with non shedders, because we couldn't enjoy the Siberian Husky we had previously. We wanted a dog that would be an in door dog. I created a spreadsheet with the 16 categories he used to evaluate the breeds with. I expanded his intensity scale of 1 thru 5 to 1 thru 10 because a lot of his ratings overlapped. When I ran the numbers of all the non shedding breeds 'Bouvier des Flanders' came out on top. I did not know what it was and had never heard of the breed before. I found a local breeder and visited there facility to see the breed in person. I ended up getting a puppy and now 18 months later I have to say it is everything the book said it was going to be, including 'big'. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for characteristics but has no pre conceived bias for a certain breed.
