Synopsis

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."

So begins the classic Rebecca, the unsurpassed modern masterpiece of romantic suspense -- one of the bestselling novels of all time! And so begins the remembrances of the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter, as she recalls the events that led her to the isolated gray stone manse on the windswept Cornish coast.

With a husband she barely knew, the young bride arrived at this immense estate, only to be inexorably drawn into the life of the first Mrs. de Winter, the beautiful Rebecca -- dead, but never forgotten; her suite of rooms never touched; her clothes still ready to be worn; and her servant, the sinister Mrs. Danvers, still royal.

And as an eerie presentiment of evil tightened around her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter began her search for the real fate of Rebecca -- and for the secrets of Manderley.

Annotation

An authorized program of the bestselling classic romantic mystery. 4 cassettes.

Internet Bookwatch

Anna Massey's dramatic voice provides just the right degree of drama and tension for Rebecca, the psychological story of a young woman's confrontations with a remote employer, a hostile housekeeper, and the ghost of a past wife. The unabridged presentation allows for full appreciation of Du Maurier's works and subtlety: highly recommended.

Biography

The Cornish coast had probably never seemed so ominous until Daphne du Maurier set her pen to it. Playing up the isolated, somewhat wild patches of the area she called home, du Maurier created gothic stories tinged by both romance and horror -- most famously with her tale of the ultimate nightmare ex-wife, Rebecca.

Hi, I first read this book when I was 13. Loved it, and read it a few more times by the time I was 40. Had not thought about it in a long time, but had a dream about it last night. Guess it is time to re-read it.....
