I went to the store and they did not have the book. they ordered it for me, it never came, calls to the call center did no good. they sent my refund check to the wrong place, and I never had my book for my class. I finally got my money, and would not use them again.

Synopsis

An essential resource for candidates who need to take the revised California Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA), this inexpensive, paperbound guide includes everything needed to pass the written version of the test. Included is comprehensive coverage of the 15 competencies covered in the test, a complete study guide with key points to remember, an informative case study, and information for working with the practice test on the RICA Website. There is an emphasis on strategies for meeting the needs of all learners. The content of the revised RICA is very different from the original test and this edition reflects and emphasizes those changes.

Here’s what makes this new edition unique:

  • Over 50 percent of the content in this third edition is new, based on the revised RICA.

  • The material is now organized into 15 “competencies” to match the revised RICA’s different structure. The author has modified the titles of the 15 competencies and the names of the major topics within each competency, making the material briefer and clearer.

  • The change in emphasis in the Content Specifications for the revised RICA is reflected in this edition.

  • Included is much greater coverage of the important topic of Fluency.

  • The role of Academic Language and Background Knowledge in reading development is acknowledged in the revised RICA and covered in this new edition.

  • The topic of Universal Access receives considerable coverage, as it does in the revised RICA.

  • All topics covered include a section on how teachers differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Included are specific teaching ideas for struggling readers and students with reading difficulties or disabilities, English Learners and speakers of nonstandard English, and advanced learners.

Praise for the third edition:

“I would like to commend the author for the organization, readability level, abbreviated length, and accuracy of information…thank you for introducing me to a Guide that is so competently prepared that I have already given it to my Children’s Literature class.” —Anna Bolling, California State University

“This text provides a comprehensive overview of the reading process in a concise readable format that will be an excellent help to those who are preparing for the RICA exam. The short chapters are consistent in structure, contain excellent definitions and succinct explanation of the concepts which help transform the process into a coherent whole.” —Candace Poindexter, Loyola Marymount University
