As a student working on a degree as a literacy specialist, I found this text to be the best one that I have come across, so far. The writing is clear, precise, and useful. She organizes the information in a way that makes it easy to access, shows the progression one can use for introducing a reading program into the classroom,and clearly states the reasons for doing each activity.

This was a very thought-provoking and inspiring book. Debbie recommended teaching metacognition immediately and gave functional examples and techniques. She did not limit the complexity of her vocabulary to which she exposed her students. Some concepts outlined in her book used to increase comprehension were: Using schema, conferring, inferring, mental images, asking questions, and synthesizing....
