America's most popular thriller writer, James Patterson, presents his most daring-and astonishing-novel ever.

With the perfect marriage and a great job, Lauren Stillman loves her wonderful life . . . until she sees her husband with another woman. Devastated and lusting for revenge, Lauren has her own affair. It's supposed to be a quickie, but Lauren's night of passion takes a shocking turn when she witnesses an unbelievable and deadly crime.

Now her horrifying secret threatens to tear her life apart, pitting her need to uncover the truth against her fear that the truth may be too horrible to bear. And whichever choice she makes may cost her dearly-her job, her marriage . . . or even her life.

Joseph L. Carison - Library Journal

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive." NYPD detective Lauren Stillwell finds out the hard way that a lie is the most difficult thing to keep alive. After seeing her husband entering a hotel room with another woman, Lauren jumps to the conclusion that he is cheating on her and, in retaliation, she has a one-night "quickie" with a fellow police officer. If this were the end of the story, it would still qualify as interesting fiction, but Patterson and Ledwidge have no intention of making things easier for Lauren. What begins as a simple act of desperation soon evolves into a complex and often deadly series of cover-ups, lies, and deceptions. Actress Mary Stuart Masterson skillfully keeps the suspense moving, giving each character a distinct personality, and helping listeners overcome the occasional florid prose by pulling us deeper and deeper into the "tangled web" Lauren creates. Highly recommended for all libraries; Patterson is sure to have a large and loyal following.

Biography

Not making any bones about his bid for success, James Patterson once declared he wanted to be known as “the king of the page-turners.” While that may seem like a pretty grand ambition, Patterson is as worthy of that title as any author working today.

At the wrong place at the wrong time? Or is it something deeper...by Kasia_S

June 22, 2009: The title certainly fits the bill, this book was a furiously fast read, I think I knocked it down in a few hours and as fun as it was, it's not something deep or memorable. I have to agree with other reviewers who said that whenever Patterson shares his name on his book with another author they are very watered down, I can't put my finger on it, but the format and feel was similar to one of the latest I read from him, "Sail", which wasn't awfully impressive. I know the man can write, I'm currently plowing through the Alex Cross novels and being on my 4th book of that series I am blown away by how great they are; very insightful, deep and intriguing. Having said that I will still read the stuff he co-writes but I think those books will be best borrowed from the library, that way I can enjoy them and not feel like I wasted any money, when people pay for a bad book they seem to hate it even more.

Lauren Stillwell feels that something isn't right in her marriage, her hot life with her husband Paul is slowly dwindling away, their great friendship and rocking bedroom life has shriveled to a barely tolerable acceptance and she is saddened until she thinks she's being betrayed. Without knowing all the facts she somehow decides to get even with him and acts on her flirtatious relationship with her coworker Scott, the sweet revenge seems to be going well until she witness something that makes her blood freeze. Someone who looks like her husband is outside Scott's home and when they men collide with each other one clearly wins. Thrown into a deep well of dread, she's put on the case to solve something she is aware of but she knows that revealing the truth to her coworkers who are obviously all cops isn't going to work in her favor, even if she didn't do anything. When things seem complicated enough Lauren discovers more of her husband's real life and who he is, her friend and lover is more of a stranger than she could have imagined.

I was surprised at how irrational Lauren acted, especially when she was so sad about the state of her marriage, she let flirting with other men temporarily fill her wounds instead of working on the problem itself. If you have a cavity you have to drill it, not ignore it or eat candy all day! If the relationship sucks then walk away, don't live at two worlds at the same time...I mean no one can be perfect but some of her choices left her no other options than to be in pain. Overall this was a nice snack of a book, but like I said, not the best thing I read.
