Textbook Information
Maxwell (education, George Mason U.) has definite ideas on qualitative research design, and presents those, rather than a compendium of conventional wisdom, to students just beginning research for their dissertation and to other new researchers. Without noting a date for the first edition, he has revised his discussion of paradigm issues, personal goals, site and participant selection, validity, and other topics. He has also made his realist philosophical foundation more explicit. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
After teaching qualitative research design and methods for seven years at Harvard, Maxwell has come to the conclusion that thoughtful research design should precede proposal writing, a turn of events unique in conducting qualitative research. He presents his approach by defining what researchers really do, from constructing a theoretical framework and deciding on data collection methods to anticipating potential validity threats to a conclusion. Paper edition (unseen), $17.95. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

January 07, 2008: This book helps the reader develop a framework for a rigorous qualitative research study without suggesting that qualitative research is a step-by-step process. This is not a qualitative how-to book, but if you already know how to conduct interviews and take fieldnotes then you will find this book very useful as you plan your qualitative (or mixed methods) study. There is a chapter devoted to dissertation planning, but the book will be useful to anyone who wants to conduct a well thought out and useful qualitative research study.
