If you have been a fan of Henry and his big dog Mudge, it may be a surprise to learn that Mudge was once a puppya very large puppy. For kids just learning to read, the simple sentences and pages with delightful drawings by Sucie Stevenson will be just right. Readers will discover that Mudge loves his owner Henry, crackers and the other family pet, a small cat. They spend hours playing together and after exhausting themselves snuggle up together for a nap. (So much for the theory that cats and dogs do not get along.) One point that comes across is that dogs like Mudge drool and they drool a lot; if that is not appealing, then a dog like Mudge may not be the pet of choice. A Pre-level 1 book in the "Ready-To-Read" series. 2004, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Ages 3 to 5.
