Enter a world of seedy nightclubs, dangerous, dimly-lit streets, and cool, wise-cracking detectives…
It's the hard-boiled world of pulp fiction, a genre that was born in the disillusioned decades following World War I, and has been enriched by writers of every generation since.
A unique blend of rapid-fire action and cynical humor are the hallmarks of the storytelling style developed by such writers as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Those two pastmasters are joined here by eighteen other gifted and innovative practitioners of the art, among them Cornell Woolrich, James M. Cain, Mickey Spillane, Elmore Leonard, Ross Macdonald, and Jim Thompson. To demonstrate the fascination that pulp fiction has exerted on superb writers more often associated with other genres and artforms, stories by Stephen King and Quentin Tarantino are also included.
The world outside may often seem gray. But the hard-drinking, two-fisted, apparently indestructible private eye still lives in the pages of Pulp Fictions. What lover of fast-paced, fast-talking stories with durable, if somewhat dubious, heroes could resist this unrivaled collection?
Peter Haining has spent many years collecting pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s. An aficionado of crime, suspense, and horror fiction, he has compiled dozens of anthologies, including A Sherlock Holmes Companion, London After Midnight, and Vampire Hunters' Casebook.

March 19, 2000: A good collection of Pulp Stories. As they are short most have a minimal amount of development in the depth of the plots and some like 'Freaky Deaky' and 'The Watch' are excerpts from larger stories. If you are interested in Hard Boiled Crime stories I recomend this collection as a good overview.
