Description: This new addition to the Essentials in Cytopathology series is a comprehensive, user-friendly review coveriing the cytologic spectrum of pulmonary neoplasia and non-neoplastic disease.
Purpose: Cytology is an essential component of the trend toward using less invasive techniques for tissue diagnosis. While there are obvious advantages, the ever-decreasing amount of tissue received requires careful allocation, including the addition of appropriate ancillary studies to optimize diagnostic yield. Also when dealing with limited material, an awareness of the differential diagnosis may aid in circumventing diagnostic pitfalls. This book amply addresses these issues, which are not infrequent dilemmas for cytology trainees and professionals.
Audience: This will be useful for cytopathologists and fellows and will also appeal to pathology residents and cytotechnicians with a particular interest in pulmonary pathology. Both authors are renowned in the field and have used their wealth of experience to create a concise and intelligible textbook.
Features: The book follows a stepwise progression beginning with the multiple sources of specimens as well as appropriate preservation and processing techniques. The authors then describe the expected normal constituents of the specimens. Subsequent chapters discuss reactive conditions as well as infectious processes, both of which feature routinely in most cytology practices. Miscellaneous conditions such as sarcoidosis, lipoid pneumonia and alveolar proteinosis are also covered. The authors then move on to neoplastic disease, commencing with benign tumors and proceeding to details of the critical area of primary carcinomas/carcinoids. Nonepithelial tumors are also discussed. A thorough review of metastatic tumors follows. Every chapter is clearly laid out with key points highlighted, an ample differential diagnosis reviewed with several tables, suggested ancillary studies such as immunohisto/cytochemistry or flow cytometry and numerous accompanying color photographs. Areas of interest may be speedily located using either the contents or the index. Several references are listed in the Suggested Reading section at the end of each chapter. On the other hand, not a lot of emphasis is placed on newer techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound guided aspirates, and navigational bronchoscopy is not discussed. While mesothelioma is a pleural malignancy, a short discussion of this entity, which can feature in the differential of peripheral pleural associated masses, would not have been amiss. Molecular studies are very briefly alluded to, though some references are cited in the Suggested Reading section.
Assessment: This is a succinct yet fairly wide-ranging book on a prominent area of nongynecologic cytology, authored by skilled cytopathologists who have a deep understanding of the advantages and certainly fewer limitations of pulmonary cytopathology. The authors take a practical approach, indicating when multidisciplinary collaboration is required to achieve the most appropriate diagnosis. This book is also to be lauded for its portability and accessibility and certainly deserves a place on the library shelves of cytology trainees and professionals.
