      Synopsis

When Property Of was published in 1977, Kirkus Reviews described it as “that precious commodity, the first novel of great promise.” In telling the story of a young outsider who is obsessed with her gang-leader lover but unwilling to commit to becoming one of “the Property of the Orphans”—the tough girls who belong to the boys on the avenue—Alice Hoffman explores hard truths about how difficult it is to love another, and yet how much more difficult it is to pull away.

      Biography

In a prolific career that began with early writings in the American Review, Alice Hoffman has expanded and developed the idea of family and community -- the forces that bind it together and the forces that drive it apart -- with understated and elegant prose and powerful and complex characters.

January 13, 2002: This book was violent and risky. It was very descriptive how life is for a Gang. As you got through the book, you can feel the happiness, pain, and hoplessness the narrator went through just to impress one boy.

      Almost addicting...I couldn't put it down!!!!!!by Anonymous

August 19, 2001: Alice Hoffman is awesome! I was tied down to the book until I finished the last page. I felt as if I was right there w/ the main character- feeling sad, happy, free, numb, etc. I can't wait to read another book by her!!!
