Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:This book provides an overview of nursing's major contemporary issues including collective bargaining, evidence-based practice, the faculty shortage, the status of the nursing doctorate degree, and other timely issues.
Purpose:The purpose is to "assist students to understand what it means to be a professional nurse; to appreciate the history of nursing," and prize nursing's values, standards, and ethics. The authors hope that it instills an appreciation of life-long learning and the need to become a contributing member of the profession.
Audience:Its basic audience has been students in a bridge course from RN to BSN, but it could be used in early baccalaureate courses and as a resource for practicing nurses and graduate students.

The book has been designed to be student friendly with care, including visual features to aid visual learners. Key terms are in boldface and explained in the glossary. Chapters include self-assessment exercises, evidence-based practice notes, and critical thinking exercises. An instructor's manual contains activities for both large and small groups, and for in and out of class sessions. A test bank is included as are chapter outlines and objectives and suggested readings.
Assessment:This book is very rich in content yet is readable for both the novice as well as the seasoned professional. The topics are timely and lend themselves well toreflection and discussion.
