Synopsis

Thoroughly updated for the Fifth Edition, this comprehensive manual covers over 550 signs and symptoms. More than 300 of the most important signs and symptoms are organized alphabetically; each entry includes a description, emergency interventions (where appropriate), history and physical examination, causes, special considerations, and patient counseling. Over 500 illustrations, tables, and flowcharts are included. Appendices describe 250 less familiar signs and symptoms and provide English/Spanish translations of common signs and symptoms. New to this edition: signs and symptoms of emerging diseases, including avian influenza, blast lung injury, and metabolic syndrome; flowcharts that guide practitioners through assessment evaluation; and appendices on common laboratory test values and conducting a patient history.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Carole A. Kenner, RNC, DNS, FAAN (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description:This is a quick reference for finding the clinical significance of common signs and symptoms. The last edition was published in 2003.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide students and professionals with a quick reference to the signs and symptoms seen in clinical settings. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience:The audience is students and practicing health professionals.
Features:The book is alphabetized, starting with abdominal distention, making it easy to find the sign or symptom. With each symptom, if there is a gender consideration (such as with otosclerosis being more common in women) or an age consideration, these are listed. The book is one of the few to include Spanish and English listings of these signs on the face pages. It includes information in the appendixes on herbs and symptoms that may be related to their use.
Assessment:This edition adds information on symptoms related to new syndromes like metabolic syndrome and emerging diseases such as monkeypox. Inclusion of this content justifies a new edition. Differential diagnosis flowcharts guide patient assessment and ultimately facilitate a diagnosis. There is no other book quite like this one. Other books focus on specific diseases, such as allergies or cardiovascular disease, while this one provides a comprehensive reference.
