Purpose:The contributors to this edition of Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy deliver the most up-to-date, clinically sophisticated, and interdisciplinary approaches to the definition, assessment, and treatment of sexual problems and disorders. Given the rapid changes in the field in the last six years, a new guidebook is sure to be desired by those who teach and practice in this area.
Audience:This book is for the clinician, the academic, and the graduate student in clinical or counseling psychology. The editor and contributors are well known in the field of human sexuality and widely published.
Features:Operating definitions of some common disorders begin the book. The current diagnostic dialogues are important in a field that not long ago included homosexuality as a disorder. Two large sections include chapters on known disorders for each gender. The final section of the book covers special issues and includes chapters on a variety of topics, including sexuality and illness, gender dysphoria, and a guide to sexual pharmacology for the clinician. The book doesn't seek to underscore its generalizability to clinicians, but most therapists will recognize that patients they are treating for other causes have co-morbid sexual difficulties and these may predate or follow other difficulties.
Assessment:This highly readable book is of value to mostpractitioners working with adults, even if their caseload is general and not specific to sex therapy. The updated information on pharmacology is very relevant given the high numbers of therapy patients who are also taking psychotropic medication. The definitions of difficulty/disorder are sensitive, enhancing an approach to sex therapy based on norms of behavior. This fourth edition comes six years after the third and it is highly justified with the pharmacological and diagnostic distinctions made.

Biography

Sandra R. Leiblum, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology, Director of the Center for Sexual and Relationship Health, and Director of the Psychology Internship Program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. An internationally recognized authority in sex therapy, Dr. Leiblum has received numerous awards for her professional contributions, including the Masters and Johnson Award from the Society for Sex Therapy and Research and the Professional Standard of Excellence Award from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She is the author or editor of over 125 journal articles, chapters, and books on various aspects of male and female sexuality, and is widely recognized for her teaching and clinical activities.
