This is the second edition of an introductory textbook of clinical nephrology. The first edition was published in 1994. The purpose is to provide the reader with a fresh, succinct, and accessible but comprehensive overview of clinical nephrology. A second goal of this book is to help disseminate both existing and newly acquired knowledge in nephrology to the professional community. The objectives of this book are very worthy and the editors have met them. Although there are numerous referenced textbooks in clinical nephrology, very few are targeted at non-nephrologists. The book is written for medical students, house officers, and primary care physicians. More than 80 authors who are considered authorities in the field have contributed to this book. A unique approach of this book is that two independent groups of editors have edited each chapter. This book contains numerous tables, illustrative figures, and outstanding color photographs. The references are pertinent. An outstanding feature of this book is the organization of the chapters in a logical and easy-to-follow manner. The index is comprehensive. The appearance is elegant and reflects great deal of "finesse. This is an outstanding reference on clinical nephrology targeted at physicians in training and busy clinicians. It has many excellent features to make it a true primer. First, chapters are very well organized in a logical and easy-to-find manner. Second, the coverage is succinct yet comprehensive and pertinent. Third, illustrations, tables, and algorithms are clear and easy to follow. Finally, the book focuses on valuable and useful clinical information. This is a must for medical libraries and bookstoresand is highly recommended for primary care physicians, house officers, and students.

Description:This edition of the National Kidney Foundation's book follows three years after the previous edition with significant updates and revisions. It is written by an illustrious group of leaders in the field and concisely covers all relevant areas of nephrology.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a primer-type nephrology book. This worthwhile objective in a field with a number of multivolume textbooks is met in an impressive fashion with this book.
Audience:As convincingly emphasized in the foreword, the book is written for all healthcare providers involved in nephrology, including those in training. The book stands out especially in terms of the qualification and authority of the contributors and the editors.
Features:The book covers the whole field of nephrology in concise and well-illustrated chapters and sections. There are useful cross-references between chapters/sections, and each chapter is followed by a list of pertinent references in the recent literature. Although succinct and fresh, the chapters achieve impressive depth. Furthermore, it is richly illustrated with color plates where needed. On the downside, and possibly because of the intended short turn-around time, there are a fair number of typographical errors.
Assessment:This is an indispensable resource for clinicians, teachers, and trainees in the field. As a primer, it represents a rather unique resource, and its up-to-date content clearly justifies this new edition.
