Description:This multiauthored textbook of geriatric medicine features a case-based approach, an expanded number of chapters, and a CD-ROM of various assessment tools in action. This edition updates the fourth edition of 2002.
Purpose:Its purpose is to teach the approach to caring for older persons and their families and caregivers in a variety of settings. Through case-based chapters, a sense of what it is really like for patients and caregivers is evoked. The book succeeds admirably at meeting these worthy objectives.
Audience:The audience is primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, as well as trainees in these fields.
Features:The first of the book's three sections, on principles and practice, describes the domains of care and locations of care of older persons. The second unit discusses geriatric syndromes and common special problems. The third unit covers selected clinical problems by organ system. Each of the 52 chapters has a pretest and a post-test with stated educational objectives and a multipart case example that runs through the book. There are annotated resources and references at the end of each chapter. The CD-ROM shows a number of assessment tools in action, such as the get-up-and-go test.
Assessment:This edition reflects the growing capacity to cite a "party line" of geriatric medicine in an enlarging list of topics. The chapters have an even tone and style that is user friendly throughout. This is a good introduction to geriatric medicine and is well worth reading.
