Description:This book provides questions for self-assessment and information for review for the public health and epidemiology sections of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam. This is the 9th edition; the original publication came out in 1976. It contains 500 questions with answers and an extensive bibliography.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide medical students and physicians with a comprehensive and convenient instrument for self-assessment and review in the field of epidemiology and public health. The format of the questions parallels the questions contained in the USMLE. The information places an emphasis on the importance of the knowledge to the practice of clinical medicine. This is especially important because these topics don't always receive the attention they deserve in the undergraduate medical school curriculum.
Audience:The book is written specifically for the use of medical students and physicians, but the information can be useful to other health science disciplines as well. The author appears to be eminently qualified to complete such as work as she is an MD and MPH and currently works in the field of prevention.
Features:The book is broken down into sections related to epidemiology, prevention, and issues of public health including biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, provision of health services, and legal and ethical issues. Each section contains a series of questions followed by the answers accompanied by explanations. References are included to encourage further exploration of the topic and verification of theinformation. These features allow the user to take the tests, review the answers, and identify gaps in knowledge. This is better than the usual presentation of information.
Assessment:I find this book to be an excellent study guide and would recommend it to any student preparing for the USMLE as well as to practitioners who want to update their knowledge in the areas of preventive medicine, epidemiology, and public health.

October 03, 2009: this book was published in 2001, and references books from 1998. could be helpful for some concepts that don't change with time (biostats, epi), but terrible when it comes to treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases. sadly, there isn't much else out there for prev med and PH.
