January 20, 2009: At first I found this book to be somewhat frustrating, because many times the answer is a obscure or deep maneuver, with no obvious win. But then I realized that each situation was an opportunity. So I stuck with it, and looking back I have to admit I've learned a lot about overall chess theory. There are tactics, but as stated in other reviews it handles what to do in the 90% of positions when there isn't a tactic. This book has also forced me to study endgames, which like many players I avoided in the past. This book is not for beginners, but if you have played for a while and hit a plateau, then it will be a fresh challenge.

January 05, 2009: This is not really a puzzle book, but a training book. As Cheng explains, when you do a tactics books, your mind is placed in a contrived situation of finding a tactic that for certain is there. This book, on the other hand, mixes in defense, strategic positions and other intangibles. You are therefore also exercising your "thought process". You should do circles on a purely tactical book first, before attempting this one. The production quality is first rate, and I especially like the feel and weight of the paper. Maybe larger diagrams would have been nice. Because of the unique layout, you get the solutions without having to go to a seperate section.
