October 18, 2007: Portrait and Candid Photography Photo Workshop by Erin Manning is not only a useful and informative book on digital photography, but also a very good read. The author's style is lively and engaging and, most importantly, she conveys highly technical information in a way that is accessible to beginners without 'talking down' to more experienced digital photographers. While she has great advice for relating to the person being photographed (no matter the age), I found especially useful the information and tips she provided for taking pictures of infants and small children and the chapter on action photographs. The photographs in the book are beautiful--strong compositions, novel ways of seeing, illustrative of her points, and always evocative of the personality of her subjects. Erin used me as a reader of her book while it was in development, because I was a neophyte digital photographer and could let her know when I did not understand something she had written. For purposes of disclosure, I must also let you know that I am the (proud) mother of Erin Manning and delighted to see her good work in print.
