    Synopsis

This pony knows quite a few tricks!

A new petting zoo has opened in River Heights. Nancy, George, and Bess can't wait to check it out — the zoo has the cutest shetland pony named Buttons. And it looks like the Clue Crew won't have to wait very long to get a glimpse of Buttons — he keeps escaping from his pen and showing up all over town! He's getting pretty famous for eating the flowers in everyone's front lawns. As much as Nancy secretly wishes Buttons would turn up on her lawn, she knows it's important to make sure he stays put. The only trouble is, no one knows how he's getting out. Sounds like it's time for the Clue Crew to saddle up and settle this pony problem!

    Children's Literature

Nancy Drew and her friends are out to solve yet another mystery. Every night, Buttons the pony escapes from the town's new petting zoo and the clue crew quickly jumps on the case to figure out how Buttons is getting out. Throughout their investigation, they question many people, which helps them compile a suspect list to get to the bottom of the mystery. Eventually Nancy pieces together all of the clues she has gathered and tells the farmer how Buttons is escaping. The answer to the mystery surprises all, but with a little creative thinking, the group figures out how to keep Buttons in the petting zoo so that the children in the town can come visit the zoo and take a ride on this amazing pony. Throughout this book, Keene enhances the mystery by encouraging readers to use literary skills such as prediction and inference without readers even knowing that is what they are doing. These elements of mystery combined with the easy-to-follow plot and the suspense keep the readers' attention throughout the entire book. Keene also includes a few black-and-white illustrations throughout the text, which helps the reader to meet the characters and develop a more intimate understanding of them. Reviewer: Shana Warhola

    Biography

Carolyn Keene is the author of the ever-popular Nancy Drew (All New) Girl Detective and Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series.

Macky Pamintuan was born and raised in Davao, a city in the southern Philippines. As a young child, drawing was his favorite pastime and an activity that brought him delight and satisfaction. Early on, his parents discovered that giving him paper and pencil was a sure way to keep him busy, quiet, and out of trouble. He still remembers the day when he successfully drew Mickey Mouse and Superman, a huge breakthrough and a sweet triumph. He moved to San Francisco at age 21 and in 1998 enrolled in the Academy of Art College to pursue illustration. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in December 2003 and placed on the President's Honor List. When not illustrating, Macky enjoys playing basketball, his other true passion.

October 04, 2009: I got these for some of my daughter's friends and for her as gifts and they were a hit. A great way to introduce Nancy Drew to your young child. Appropriate for the age listed, easy for the 6 year olds to follow. Her only complaint is there are not enough pictures. Otherwise well done!
