    Synopsis

"[When we read and write poetry,] it is as if a long-settled cloud in our mind suddenly dissipates, and we are divine once again."-- from the Introduction

Poetry is the language of devotion in prayer, chant, and song. Reading and writing poetry creates clarity, deepens and expands spiritual inquiry, and cultivates wisdom, compassion, self-confidence, patience, and love. In author Robert McDowell's words, poetry makes you into a tuning fork of the Divine.

But poetry has disappeared over the centuries from religious ceremonies, academic curricula, and public discourse. In Poetry as Spiritual Practice, the first inspirational and instructional guide to combine poetry and spirituality, McDowell restores poetry as the natural language of spiritual practice and invites you to recognize poetry as "the pure sound and shape of your spirit."

Vividly illustrated with a wide range of poems from all historical eras and poetic traditions, numerous religions and faiths, and McDowell's own and his students' work, Poetry as Spiritual Practice will reintroduce you to the unique pleasure of verse. And meditations throughout will allow you to integrate reading and writing poetry into your spiritual journeys and daily life.

Since many of us have long forgotten, or never learned, the mechanics and terminology of poetry -- trochaic feet and tropes trip us up; we can't tell a villanelle from its shorter cousin, rondeau; and a terza rima may as well be a tanka -- this is also an instructional handbook on reading and writing poetry. An engaging guide through the landscape of world poetry, McDowell argues along the way for the many practical benefits of poeticliteracy.

Making poetry an essential part of daily rituals, aspirations, and intentions will put you on the path to greater meaning, growth, and peace in your life. At once an engaging technical primer, a profound meditation on the relationship between poetry and the Divine, and an inspirational guide for integrating poetry into spiritual practice, Poetry as Spiritual Practice will become a cherished companion.

    Graham Christian - Library Journal

Much-published poet McDowell's new book attempts two difficult tasks: to speak sincerely of spirituality and to create a kind of primer for writing poetry. Many books have attempted each of these separately, of course, but very few together, and it is inevitable that McDowell would give short shrift to each in a book of under 300 pages. McDowell begins with poetry as an entry into spirituality before moving toward the technical aspects of poetry itself (rhyme, meter, form, genre). The book includes many richly rewarding poems (more than a few by McDowell himself) and, if necessarily tentative, is a truly innovative contribution to spiritual reading.

September 19, 2009: This is a wonderfully evocative, lyrical and inspirational volume. If you are a practiced poet, or just beginning, or just want to use poetry in your spiritual practices, this book is a must-addition to your library. My copy is sitting on the nightstand, so I can refer to it whenever I need inspiration.

March 09, 2009: I loved this book. As a seeker, I look for ways to live a spiritually aware life. It has been many years since the mechanics of poetry and I shared a classroom. I found the book a delightful invitation back to the grace of the lyrical word. I enjoyed the selections of poetry that served as illustrations, and the exercises themselves are engaging and fun.

In a sense, this book is a guided course in the appreciation of poetry, as well as offering a way of connecting with your own inner poet. It is very readable as well as encouraging. It's as if the author was your personal coach, urging, "Yes, you can do this! You too can write poetry!" Many of the exercises are to be done with a partner (or not), making this small volume a good choice for a reading group or spiritual group to explore together.

This is a book I will return to, practice with, and share with both the seekers and lovers of the written word in my life. In fact, one day soon, I will pick up some Moleskine large format journals, add perhaps a candle, a bottle of wine, a variety of writing implements, maybe even a warm and cuddly throw, and put them all in an attractive box and gift them.

And then I'll do it again for someone other than myself!
