March 30, 2009: Yet again, the authors and editors of the Dipiro series have created a thorough and comprehensive text on pharmacotherapy. There is not too much in the way of pharmacology (which is a good thing, there are plenty of other texts out there for that topic). The advantages of this edition over the previous editions include color (wow), tabbed edges (sections are easier to find), and better charts and flowsheets. Although it may not be the most in-depth text out there, it is certainly an excellent text for students and professors alike. It is similar to the previous years in content, although some guidelines have been updated. Like previous years, there is background information on disease states (simplified a little so that it is more of a Pharm D level and not quite an MD level).
It is well worth the money to purchase the handbook too. It is a more "pocket-sized" version and contains all the gold nuggets from the big boy. Easier to carry in a backpack or briefcase, but it is still good to keep the big boy around when more in-depth information is needed. There is also a casebook out there. It is not necessary for the practitioner, but is a great tool for students. It presents cases and allows students to work through them to get a better feel for practicing in the "real world." All three books are expertly written and contain great information. I acutally own the last three editions of Dipiro. I hadn't planned on buying this newest one, but it was given to me as a gift. And believe me, I am very glad that I ended up getting it. The older editions are not only obsolete in information, but are put to shame by the user-friendly nature and aesthetically pleasing qualities of the new one. BUY IT!I Also Recommend: Pharmacotherapy Handbook, Pharmacotherapy Casebook.
