Description: This book reviews more than 100 disease states emphasizing in their pharmacological treatment, providing tables and figures to illustrate and summarize major points of discussion.
Purpose: "According to the authors, the purpose is to provide health professionals with in-depth information about different disease states in a book "designed to meet the classroom and independent study needs of today's learners." The authors meet these worthy objectives. "
Audience: Although it is not specified, it appears this book is written mainly for pharmacy students since it emphasizes the pharmacologic treatment of disease states. However, it can serve as a general reference for pharmacy practitioners. The authors are known experts in their areas.
Features: The book covers the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of more than 100 disease states. Brief patient cases help develop the critical thinking abilities of readers and illustrate the clinical relevance of the topic, while the tables and figures aid in understanding the different concepts.
Assessment: This easy to read book is similar to others currently available: Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic approach, 6th edition, DiPiro et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2005), and Applied Therapeutics: The Clinical Use of Drugs, 8th edition, Koda-Kimble et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005). However, these other books provide more detailed information and more extensive literature review than this one.
