Purpose:The purpose is not only to provide readers with the pharmacology basics, but also to assist practitioners in learning the process of identifying the disease, reviewing the drugs used to treat the disease, selecting a treatment based on goals of therapy and special considerations, and learning how to adjust therapy if it fails to meet the goals. This is an important book that will help to educate students and will be a worthwhile resource for experienced advanced practice nurses. The authors do an excellent job of meeting these complex objectives.
Audience:Those in the family practice arena are intended as the primary focus of this book, but it is appropriate for a wider nurse practitioner audience. The authors have significant experience teaching advanced practice nurses the general principles of prescribing and monitoring drug therapy in a systematic manner. They are experts in their individual fields, one as a nurse practitioner and educator, and the other as a PharmD and educator.
Features:The book begins with an extended introduction to the principles of therapeutics. Subsequent sections are organized by disorders pertaining to specific systems. The final sections focus on health promotion and an integrative approach to patient care. The book is not intended as a comprehensive resource, but rather as a method of approaching pharmacotherapeutic treatment ofany disorder. First, second, and third line treatments and rationale to support the pharmacologic decisions are provided. The book includes excellent tables and algorithms. Case studies encourage readers to use the chapters to apply the information and solve the patient care scenario.
Assessment:This excellent book combines pharmacology with diseases commonly encountered in primary care. It is a wonderful reference that will be used frequently in most primary care settings. The update with this second edition is extremely valuable since the area of pharmacology is constantly developing and changing. By providing a second edition, the authors ensure that the information is accurate and pertinent.
