August 30, 2002: President Grant has shown us what an excellent memory for fact and detail he maintained even until his last days! Being a dedicated reader of American History I found this piece of work to be both though provoking and insightful in the way it vividly brought to life one of the truly most terrible times in our nations history! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the Civil War, and the lasting effects it had on our nation!

June 29, 2002: For anyone intersted in U.S. history of the 19th century, this is a must read. No other author on the Civil War has Grant's perspective. Told in his own words, it not only gives the facts, but insight into the man who saved the country. A bestseller at the time it was written it is regarded has on of the best historical memoirs ever written.
