Reviewer:Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD(Southwestern Adventist University)
Description:This is an update of a comprehensive perianesthesia care book. The last edition was published in 1994.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a complete text for perianesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses. "Since its initial publication in 1979, The Recovery Room has evolved into the standard text for perianesthesia nurses. . .[this edition will provide] the most comprehensive coverage available under one cover." This worthy objective has been accomplished.
Audience:Students and practitioners will find this an excellent resource for all aspects of PACU nursing. The author is currently in academia but many of the 29 contributors are practitioners. The quality of the information also supports the credibility of the author.
Features:New in this edition are discussions of crisis resource management, managed care, legal and ethical issues, a fluids and electrolytes chapter, influence of herbal medications, and hypo/hyperthermia. The book is divided into five sections covering the PACU, physiologic considerations, concepts in anesthetic agents, nursing care in the PACU, and special considerations. There are many black-and-white pictures, drawings, and tables (nothing in color).
Assessment:An update of this book was very much needed and this edition is excellent. I find no major holes in the information provided. A couple of my "test topics" were not listed in the index but with a little searching I was able to find the content. The references at the end of each chapter are current and comprehensive. This is a must forschool libraries and PACU resource shelves.
