Description:This second edition of a pediatrics book is accompanied by a CD-ROM that contains USMLE-type questions.
Purpose:As stated by the authors, this book aims to teach students the basics of pediatric clinical practice by concentrating on evaluative skills and logical approaches to both common and uncommon pediatric problems rather than serving as an exhaustive reference. For a more comprehensive review, readers should consult one of the major pediatric textbooks.
Audience:The book is aimed mainly at medical students. It provides adequate information for those preparing for their exams. It could be used even during residency as a reference for quick and brief review.
Features:Divided in two main sections, general pediatric practice and pediatric subspecialties, the book is organized in such a way to help students make the transition from the system-oriented approach of the preclinical years to the problem-oriented approach of the clinical years. Some chapters focus on the general practice of pediatrics. More traditional system-oriented chapters describe a uniform, systematic approach to developing a differential diagnosis that will serve as a model for assessing all clinical problem situations. There are also chapters that focus on the areas of healthcare, medical ethics, and social and cultural issues in pediatrics. This edition has several new features that I found very helpful and interesting. Each chapter contains several "pediatric pearls" providing short but important information to remember. The CD-ROM with the USMLE-type questions andanswers should be very helpful for students who are preparing their exams. It would be helpful if the correct answer is marked on the top of the each answer explanation. The list of references after each chapter is excellent and includes Web site recommendations.
Assessment:The second edition of this book hopefully will be well received. The writing is first class, clear, and to the point. The material, presented in an easily readable and searchable format, will be appreciated by medical students preparing for the exams. The accompanying CD-ROM and list of Web sites make this book appropriate for the 21st century. The team effort of the authors has provided the pediatric community with a worthwhile contribution to the field.
