Deborah K. Fultner

This second edition presents all aspects of pain management and the latest progress in pain control. Topics include assessment tools, analgesics, nondrug control, and pain management during pregnancy, in infants, and in older adults. The first edition was published in 1989. The purpose is to provide the practitioner practical information from recent research findings on pain management that can readily be applied to all ages of clients in the clinical setting. Pain management in various clinical settings is presented. This book is written for professional nurses, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, and physicians. I agree with the editors that the book is useful for all practitioners who practice pain management. The first editor is very well known for her knowledge about methods of pain management. The second is a pain consultant and an expert in pain management. The book contains several unique features. The tables, boxes, and forms are labeled and categorized by chapter in the front of the book. The table of contents is detailed, making scanning easy. Two icons -- one for pediatric content and one to indicate the summary of recommendations -- appear in every chapter. Another useful feature is the permission granted by the editors to duplicate the tables, boxes, and forms. The black-and-white illustrations are very effective. The content is thorough, providing the reader with an in-depth picture of pain management with the newest and most effective pain control methods. This second edition contains new pharmacological methods of pain control. It covers different types of pain, problems related to pain management, pain in various populations, andspecific disease states that require pain management. All health professionals working with clients in pain will benefit from having this book to guide their practice.
