Synopsis

From Jodi Picoult, one of the most powerful writers in contemporary fiction, comes a riveting, timely, heartbreaking, and terrifying novel of families in anguish -- and friendships ripped apart by inconceivable violence. Until the phone calls came at 3:00 A.M. on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily has been shot to death by her beloved and devoted Chris as part of an apparent suicide pact -- leaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew.

The New York Times Book Review - Megan Harlan

Picoult suggests the subtle ways in which parents can place dangerous pressures on their children.

November 19, 2008: One of my favorite Jodi Picoult books. All the way til the last paragraph i was on the edge of my seat. I love how she argues both side so perfectly that you have no idea what is going to happen in the end.

November 06, 2008: The Pact was the first Jodi Picoult novel that I have read, and after reading the novel, I feel that I am unsure of her writing. Picoult left me hanging unsatisfied by the end of the novel. The beginning of the story is a definite page turner in every sense. You are immediately hooked after you realize that an abrupt shooting has been committed. You are bounced around a whimsical story of love between Chris Harte and Emily Gold in an upper class elitist environment. The story then tells of an ultimate love that couldn?t have been more right in a place where every opportunity is possible. But then you are subjected to many twists and turns that lead you into constant wonder. You are still entranced until the last half of the story that seems never ending. And by a final outcome that leaves you saying? that was it. As a quick read, it wouldn?t be to bad, but don?t expect to much.
