    Synopsis

A novel about holding on, letting go, and learning to love again.

Now in paperback, the endearing novel that captured readers' hearts and introduced a fresh new voice in women's fiction — Cecelia Ahern.

Holly couldn't live without her husband Gerry, until the day she had to. They were the kind of young couple who could finish each other's sentences. When Gerry succumbs to a terminal illness and dies, 30-year-old Holly is set adrift, unable to pick up the pieces. But with the help of a series of letters her husband left her before he died and a little nudging from an eccentric assortment of family and friends, she learns to laugh, overcome her fears, and discover a world she never knew existed.

The kind of enchanting novel with cross-generational appeal that comes along once in a great while, PS, I Love You is a captivating love letter to the world!

Cecelia Ahern, the 22-year-old daughter of Ireland's prime minister, holds a degree in Journalism and Media Communications. She has completed her second novel, Rosie Dunne, and is at work on her third. She lives in Dublin, Ireland.

September 04, 2009: This novel is one of the many examples of why books are better than movies. I've only read one exception to that rule, and that's Forrest Gump (goodness, that book was terrible!!!). I watched the movie before I picked up the book, and though the movie was cute and adorable in a romantic comedy/Hollywood sort of way, the book is much more detailed and whole and realistic.

Holly is a great, true-to-life character. The reader is with her through every emotion that she has, and what a roller-coaster of emotions! Which makes sense, considering she just lost the love of her life and her soul mate. Chapter by chapter, month by month, she picks up the pieces of her life and puts herself back together, and you're with her every step of the way. And I don't just mean physically, but emotionally, also. I felt for Holly. There were times when tears almost slipped down my cheeks.

This is not your typical chicklit. It is a story about a girl, going through tough times and then finding herself at the end. Which is a concept usually associated with chicklit. But usually the girl falls in love with a handsome, witty man. This book, PS, I Love You, is more than that. It's a girl learning to love herself and coping with life after it almost destroys her. This story is definitely a unique representation of tragedy and personal reconstruction.

It is light reading; I read it quickly mostly because I didn't want to put it down! The language flows smoothly and succinctly. Holly's family and friends were characters that were funny and sympathetic, crazy and adoring. They were the foundation of the book, and the support system for Holly's character; she would not have been so successful if it weren't for them.

Go ahead, watch the movie. But I recommend reading the book, too. You will learn more about the characters and delve into more detail about love, life, and finding personal happiness.

Sorry, the one book that wasn't as good as the movie...by NatalieTahoe

August 31, 2009: Although I liked the book, it was definitely a consistent feeling throughout that you were just being told what was happening within the different scenes, not just reading, feeling, and experiencing it, as you would through other novels. There were so many startling places throughout in which things seemed out of place, and the point of view switched so quickly at one point, that it was noticeable. The best moments, though, were the descriptions of emotions that Holly was feeling over losing Gerry, and it was touching. Overall, I was disappointed in this book, and thought the movie was much better, but although I haven't read this author's latest books, I have a feeling that her stories will continue to get better, so I will definitely give her another chance.

    I Also Recommend: Garden Spells.
