Textbook Information
Practical manual on the proprioceptive facilitation approach to therapeutic exercise. For physical therapists. This edition includes new illustrations including demonstrations of the techniques and pictures of actual patient treatment. The gait and mat sections have been enlarged. Previous edition: c1993.
PNF (Proprioceptive Facilitation) is an approach to therapeutic exercise which therapists all over the world have found effective for treating patients with a wide range of diagnosis. The approach presented here is based on the concepts set out by Dr. Herman Kabat and taught by Margaret Knott.
This second edition adds many new illustrations including demonstrations of the techniques and pictures of actual patient treatment. The gait section has been expanded with an introduction to the components of normal gait and photos of patient treatment in gait. The mat section has also been enlarged and includes illustrations of patient treatment.
This how-to manual is an illustration of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) patterns and techniques for the clinician. Coverage includes beginning and advanced techniques in PNF covering mat activities and functional skills. This is a second edition text. The purpose is to review treatment methods developed by Dr. Kabot and expanded upon by Maggie Knott. The authors' intent is to provide comprehensive coverage of practical techniques with plentiful illustrations and provide a text that compliments other theoretical texts on PNF. I believe the authors have accomplished their objective in an outstanding manner. This book is written for the physical therapy practitioner in training or one who has clinical experience in movement disorders. However, it is also useful for other clinical disciplines such as occupational therapy. The authors are well suited to write this text and were all trained under Maggie Knott, a pioneer in PNF. This text includes over 200 figures and 500 illustrations. Topics include basic procedures and techniques for the extremities and trunk with functional emphasis on mat activities, gait training, and vital functions including breathing, swallowing, and speech. Evaluation, treatment planning, and goal setting are addressed in a separate chapter on patient treatment. The book is well referenced and has topical as well as cited references for further reading. Numerous tables and highlighted boxes are supplied to emphasize specific procedural techniques and key observations. Overall, the content is excellent and clearly explained. This is a very practical, easy reading text that would serve well in a clinical lab setting as part of atherapeutic exercise course. This book can also be use as a self- study guide and could serve as an excellent supplement to traditional texts in this field.
