    Synopsis

The handbook is a compact but clear and comprehensive guide to all aspects of dialysis, from preparing patients for dialysis, details of both haemo- and peritoneal dialysis, continuous haemofiltration techniques and complications of end stage renal disease. The book is aimed primarily at trainee nephrologists and renal nurses, but will be of relevance, use and interest to all other health care workers involved with patients with end stage renal disease - pharmacists, dieticians, intensivists, and even medical students! The book has been arranged in sections covering new patients with end-stage renal failure (pre-dialysis), haemodialysis, nursing haemodialysis patients, peritoneal dialysis, nursing peritoneal dialysis patients, nutrition on dialysis, special situations, complications of dialysis, death in dialysis patients, drug use and dosing in renal failure and a summary of the US DOQI and UK Renal Association standards documents. Each section is subdivided so that individual topics appear on single pages where possible. The book is patient centred, practical, and thus didactic.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Mony Fraer, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description:This second edition addresses all aspects of dialysis in a compact (one page per subject) and easy to read format (bullet point style) . New topics includes best practice guidelines, care of the dying patient, pain control, and intradialytic monitoring techniques.
Purpose:Its purpose is to provide a bedside or office tool for the busy practitioner and an essential aid in the dialysis unit. The nephrology trainees will benefit the most from it, although it is a quick reference for any practitioner providing dialysis.
Audience:This handbook addresses all healthcare personnel who interact with dialysis patients. It includes sections on nutrition in dialysis as well as nursing issues in the predialysis, peritoneal, and hemodialysis patients. The social worker will also find interesting the sections on psychosocial effects of dialysis, quality of life, compliance, employment, and rehabilitation of dialysis patients. As opposed to other dialysis literature, this handbook will be a helpful and practical tool for the kidney patient, too.
Features:A unique and very useful feature are the "special situations" topics: dialysis in the elderly, surgery in dialysis patients, how to persuade a patient to start dialysis, and pregnancy in dialysis. Also included are various standards and guidelines: KDOQI, UK Renal Association and the European Best Practice Guidelines. The complex issue of drug prescribing in dialysis is presented in a very practical chapter. Good charts summarize various aspects of dialysis (malfunctioning peritonealcatheters, dialyzer reactions, and initial peritoneal dialysis regimens) .
Assessment:This book is written in the well-known style of the Oxford handbooks (large number of subjects in a very concise and practical format) and presents dialysis and its related problems from a completely different angle than Daugirdas and Ing's Handbook of Dialysis, 3rd edition (Little, Brown, 2001) . It blends readily available information for immediate use with topics like supportive and palliative care. Although comprehensive in the number of topics that it covers, the book is rather brief in presentation of the topics.
