    Synopsis

Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon—when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

    Annotation

Her husband is two centuries away, she is related to her lover's mortal enemy, and her neighbors think she's a witch. In this unforgettable novel of time travel, Diana Gabaldon fuses wry, modern sensibility with the drama, passion, and violence of eighteenth century as she tells the story of one daring woman and the man who loves her.

    Gale Research

The novel recounts events leading to the Second Jacobite Rising through her modern eyes. Outlander garnered awards from both the Romance Writers of America and B. Dalton bookstores in the year of its publication. A Publishers Weekly reviewer hailed Outlander as "absorbing and heartwarming"; Cynthia Johnson in Library Journal lauded the book as "a richly textured historical novel with an unusual and compelling love story."

    Biography

Are they histories? Fantasies? Science fiction? While it may be impossible to categorize the books Diana Gabaldon calls “historical fantasias,” it hardly matters to the author’s huge and loyal fan base, all of whom are just eager to devour Gabaldon’s richly detailed, complexly plotted, extravagantly romantic romps through time, space, and breathtaking landscapes.

The BEST historical romance series of all time!by JamieFan

November 07, 2009: What is there to say except that this is, without a doubt, the best historical romance series of all time! Ms. Diana Gabaldon (or Herself) as she's known to us in the 'O' online communities, weaves a fabulous story throughout the pages of this book--incorporating undying love, myths, mystery, terror, and history. This, the first fiction book ever written by Herself, is so rich that one can smell and feel the air when it's being described. The settings are lush, and the characters are developed to the point that one falls in love with these imaginary people and doesn't want the story to ever end. If you never read any other historical romance series, at least take a shot on this one. It is, simply, the best fictional love story ever written!

I Also Recommend: The Tea Rose, Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander Series #2), Voyager (Outlander Series #3), The Fiery Cross (Outlander Series #5), Drums of Autumn (Outlander Series #4).

October 02, 2009: This book was hard to put down. The characters are brought out well and the story is unique. I'm not usually one for romance and am probably not the right person to say this, but I don't think this is the typical romance novel. It was there, sure, but there is so much more to the story. I cannot wait to read the next book by this author.
